Symbol of punctuation when typing in Greek

Hello everyone,

This is my first day on MacOS (after all my life on Windows), so please show the needed understanding...

Let me start by saying I am Greek. How can someone remove the symbol of punctuation when typing? What happens is that when you press the punctuation key, the symbol appears before you type the letter you want to punctuate.

I am on Big Sur 11.1 on Macbook Pro M1.

In Greek, when you're typing really fast, that symbol is really distracting!

Thank you in advance,

Konstantinos

Apple's Greek keyboard also has the ability to type άέίήόύώ directly via option shift if that is of interest. Use Keyboard Viewer to see which key does what.

It is pretty easy to make a custom keyboard with this app

The dead key problem can be avoided if you make a layout using combining diacritics that you type after the base letter.

One place to check for 3rd party keyboards is the Keyman app.

Οn a Mac, accent marks made with dead keys like that before the base letter always appear. Same for French, Spanish, etc.

You can also make accents by holding down the key for the base letter and choosing from a popup menu, but that is slow.

Whether there are 3rd party keyboards or apps where dead keys do not appear I don't know.

Hello konstantinos12,

Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities. It sounds like you're having an issue with the keyboard input on your Mac. We're happy to help.

Have you added a second input source to your keyboard settings at all? You can view your current settings by navigating to the Apple menu > System Preferences > Keyboard. The guide here can also help you check: Change Keyboard Input Sources preferences on Mac

We also recommend you check to see is you're using dead keys or the feature changes when pressing and holding the key to display the accent menu. Enter characters with accent marks on Mac

We hope the information helps.

Cheers!

Thank you for your time jdo_apple!

I'm only using ABC (US English) and Greek as input methods.

Nothing weird or strange here! In every computer I've ever used (non Mac), I have to first enter the punctuation and then type the letter that'll receive it. But in every other keyboard you don't get the punctuation symbol to show up when you're typing, it automatically registers on the letter it was intended for.

When I'm using the Keyboard viewer, I'm getting this:

Here's a short video of it:

Thanks again for your time,
