How can I get my MacBook Air after an error occurred preparing the software update

Turn off computer my any means and disconnect any external drives. Restart and immediately hold the - Shift - key. This Safe Mode and will do Repair Disk, clear cache files and only load Apple Software needed to boot computer - it will boot slowly - Normal. If all goes well, it will present the Log In Screen. Once in, run it this way for 5 - 7 minutes then restart in Normal Mode.
