macbook pro freezes

Macbook pro (high Sierra) will display the apple and the black bar as if ready to boot. But does not go any further (freezes). I can get pass this issue by pressing the following keys: OPTION, COMMAND, P, R. How can I repair this issue, i.e., so that I can boot up automatically?
