ethernet not working

I have a MacBook Pro 16"running Big Sur. I have a hub from OWC with ethernet slot. I've plugged all cables. In the network tab on system preferences It says "Thunderbolt Ethernet Slot 1 has a self-assigned IP address and will not be able to connect to the Internet." Now what?

MacBook Pro 16″, macOS 11.1

self-assigned IP address occurs momentarily for every such device. But as soon as the Router provides a good local IP address, it disappears, and this happens so fast most users have never seen this error.

It is typically caused by very primitive issues like bad cables.

The way to walk away from all pre-conceived notions is to use this article to set up the interface anew. Be sure to use a NEW unique name, never the default:

Another way users sometimes get it working is to enter manual IP address as a work-around, then change it to DHCP after it has been working for a while. Post back if you need help with choosing an appropriate address.

The other issue users encounter with multiple interfaces is that the Mac sends Internet packets to the TOPMost, working interface shown in system preferences > network.

So you may need to use the Gear icon on that pane and select "set Service order" and drag Ethernet to the Top. If Ethernet is ever not working your Internet connection will default to the next in line.

when you connect using Wi-Fi you should get a local IP address and the screen there should tell you the address of your Router.

Numbers like 192.168.xxx.yyy

10.10.xxx.yyy

and some in the 172.xxx.yyy.zzz range are local IP address.

You want to choose a number that is the same in the first three octets, but unique father down;

example:

Router address is 192.168.1.1

Wi-Fi address is 192.168.1.101

chose a number a bit higher, but less than 254 such as 192.168.1.120, and enter that manually as your Ethernet IP address.

Expected result: if the problem was ONLY due to not having a good IP address, you ethernet should take off and work.

Otherwise, that was not the only issue.

Hey there James Borzak,

We understand you're experiencing an issue with your Ethernet connection showing a self-assigned IP address on your MacBook Pro, and we'd like to see if we can assist.

Get started with the steps here: Connect to the internet with your Mac

If the issue persists, restart your Mac and try connecting again: Log out, sleep, wake, restart, or shut down your Mac

Cheers!
