Hi,
When I export a clip in "file" format it exports as .mov. But Quicktime won't play it. I can't figure out what's wrong. I am running Big Sur on a MacBook, everything is up to date. I have done this twice. The file is about 4.5 GB.

You are obviously choosing "Best" quality to export your movie.
Do not use "Best".
Use either High, Medium or Low.
These will give you the best quality for viewing.
"Best" quality is very misleading. It is only intended to be used if you are making a masterfile of your movie to be re-edited at a later date.
It results in a file 10 times bigger than normal and should not be used for anything you want to view on a computer, TV, mobile or the internet.
The files are ProRes. . . . probably the other program doesn't recognise them.
FWIW most of the time, even when re-editing, you will never notice any quality difference between Best (ProRes) and High(H.264).
I have just exported a ProRes .mov test movie and it plays perfectly in QuickTime Player.
Maybe it was just a glitch.
Yup. Was separating clips to export a high res file to further edit in another program. Is that not an option? They seem to be unplayable?
👍🏼 Thank you! Just exported in High and all is well. The ProRes was .mov, this one is .mp4. I couldn’t understand why QuickTime wouldn’t open the .mov as it’s supposed to be able to?
