Apple Watch Series 6 - Digital Clock always overlays screen when viewing

I have an Apple Watch Series 6 which I have set to 'always on' but when using apps, particularly running apps whenever I raise the wrist to view, I get the digital clock overlayed which I need to tap to remove which is annoying when you just want to see the data in the app you are running. I have read other suggestions that say turn off the 'Hide Sensitive Complications' which I have, but the digital time always shows.

It doesn't happen if you deactivate the 'always on' option, which is how I have needed to set this to now because of this issue.
