Mac Pro 2013 + D700 + Samsung Odyssey G9 / LG 49 inch

Hi guys,

Sorry to bug everyone with a topic that has been present once in the past and I hope someone has a more up to date view on it.

I'm planning to buy either the G9 or the LG 49 inch monitor (G9 of course used at 60 Hz refresh and 5120xx1440 resolution) and not sure how it works nowadays with the D700 driver and if I will run into issues.

From what I have been reading in the past people needed to connect 2 x DPs to the monitor and use PIP to get everything running smooth despite 1 x DP 1.2 having enough bandwidth for that resolution and refresh.

Is this still the case today (latest mac osx version/updates) or can I just buy the monitor and use 1 x DP cable to link my Mac Pro to it?

I also installed SwitchResX for the future when I get the monitor in order to see if I can "force" the resolution with just one cable:)

Thank you,

Mihai

Those reports were from folks using 2016 and older MacBook Pro pre-Big Sur with displays wider than 4096 pixels wide.

Your Mac uses completely different graphics processors. Similar issues have Not been reported on the Mac Pro 2013 model.

If you ARE forced to use dual-cables, the "Extended desktop" feature in the Mac and Picture-By-Picture in the display lets you combine that all back together in a very seamless way.

When you arrange your displays (in the arrange pane in displays preferences) so that they are positioned appropriately, the mouse moves feely across the [real or virtual] boundary between displays, and can drag a window with it. when a window is split across [real or virtual] displays, when you scroll that window, both halves are updated so that it scrolls "the right way".

This feature is built into macOS, and all well-behaved Mac software works with it.

Same problem here and I have the monitor on my desk and connected since yesterday.

Extended desktop works, I deactivated the default option to have them behave as two different spaces => my windows now stretch nicely and can be on both sides of the PBP implementation.

The dock sadly I cannot move to the right..and I'd like to have it either in the middle (1/2 on each "PBP" monitor emulation) or to the right.

Any way to solve this issue and the ones from Matt?

I saw some reports (not here) about the Mac Pro and the Dell 49 inch monitor and having to use 2 cables instead of one and PIP so that's what I was more afraid of.

Are there any limitations that could come out of it?

The Extended desktop feature I know of (have been using it in a past) but would it behave well if I play a movie for example?

The normal desk work, my terminals, schemas, etc I'm sure would behave well as I had something before work from home became a fact :)

Thanks to everyone that helped so far!

Hi! Happy to find this discussion. However, there is a big follow-up question that drives me crazy: So , today i bought the Samsung G9 49" and hooked it up to my Mac Pro 2013. I'm using two miniDP->DP cables and have assured that they run on two different TB buses (to not impair on performance). I've read about mac pro being able to "tile" a 5120x1440 picture this way, with two cables. but I can't figure out how. I'm currently using PBP on the monitor and the mac think it's two monitors at 2560x1440. I've extended the desktop and it works - but it sure ain't the same as one 5120x1440 monitor. The dock in't in the middle, the menu on top sits on one side only and the desktop picture is a repeat on left and right. And apps won't recognize it as a wide monitor. So, any ideas on how to get those two streams through two cables to build one 5120x1440 image?

Sorry for reviving this old thread but I was away a few weeks on vacation :)

Seems most apps (Chrome, VLC) realise that 2 displays are into play so switching them to Full Screen mode always ends up with the image on just 1/2 of the Extended Desktop.

I did not find any way to work around this so far..and while it is annoying, it seems I have no choice but to live with it.
