Deleting Songs and Playlists on iPod Classic

Resurrecting this question with the following:

I have an iPod Classic connected to a Mac-mini running Catalina 10.x via the music app. It syncs with the iPod and all songs and playlists are present.

Problem: I can only delete songs on the iPod by deleting them directly from the iPod sidebar list tab as deleting them from the main song list does not delete them from the iPod. Not a problem for a few songs but is difficult for multiple songs.

Problem: I cannot delete playlists from the iPod in the above-manner as under the iPod tab, playlists do not appear. Deleting them from the side bar under the main section does not delete them on the iPod upon re-sync (same as it does when deleting songs from the side bar). The playlist remains on the iPod.

The instructions in this thread appear to apply to iTunes not to the Music App. If I select the iPod in the side bar, go to "Sync Settings", check the "Sync Box" which is normally blanked out, I can access the playlist tab. Problem is, the playlist I want to delete is not there. Also, I would have to check every file in the song tab which would be onerous. The only other way is to re-sync the entire iPod by checking sync all music, which corrects both issues as the iPod is reloaded. Due to the size of the file, it takes an inordinate amount of time as in hours to do so.

If this is the only way to do it, ok, but it the amount of time (hours in my case) it takes to accomplish a small task; i.e., deleting or modifying a playlist and or multiple songs is cumbersome.

Can anyone with knowledge of Music and the iPod Classic help with this? I assume I'm doing something wrong with respect to the settings?

Many thanks for any help that can be provided.

The Music app is not as well suited to manual management of devices as iTunes was. When you sync with selected playlists (you can also use genres, artists, or albums but this is an unnecessary complication) then the device should end up with the content selected for syncing and nothing else. You edit a playlist in Music to adjust its contents, connect the device and sync. Items are added or removed accordingly and everything unchanged stays put. If you haven't already set up sync selections then when you everything currently on the device, but not in your selections, will be removed, this includes all playlists that might be there now. See Recover media from an iPod - Apple Community if there is any media on the device that isn't in your library.

TT2,

As a follow up, I re-synced the iPod by checking the box under the music tab to 'sync all songs to the iPod'. It erased the iPod and rewrote all the songs and playlists. It took forever due to the size of the file. (I left it to run all night).

Now, all playlists and songs are current and now when I add or subtract anything, I hit the sync box and the process works. That box was not checked for some reason and not sure about how or why.

Anyway, all is good now...CLOSED...Thanks again.
