Apple Smartphone Battery Case Problem

I purchased a apple battery smart case, which worked flawlessly for about a year. The case started to peel apart exposing the battery. I tried to order a warranty replacement which I never received. I purchased another apple smart battery from Best Buy. In about 8 months the smart case stopped working. I have two replacement cases given to me at the Apple Store in Naperville, both cases have failed and are not being recognized by the phone. I am unable to charge the case while it is on the phone. The phone reports the case has zero charge even after the case has been charged. I have spent about 7 hours on the phone with apple backing up my phone restoring it and downloading IOS 14.4. Still the battery case does not work correctly. I went to the apple store in Naperville IL to get my 3rd case which did not work either. I was told to contact Best Buy as that is we’re I originally purchased 2nd case after not receiving replacement case under warranty from apple. Best Buy told me to contact Apple Care. After spending over and hit on the phone with apple care, the refuse to give me a in store credit or a refund. They are sending another Apple battery smart case that they promised will work, after putting a $143.00 hold on my Credit card . I have done research and realize the problem is from the IOS update to 14? Can any one confirm this? Will Apple correct the problem if so when?

Thanks for your follow up. My phone is on automatic update IOS 14.4. I turned off optimize battery charging and yes the battery case was charging and does recognize the battery. However, not sure how long this option will work for. I’ve already had to replace my battery. Also, not sure if my phone will overheat and not charge past 80 percent with this option. But yes it worked . Do you know if that is something Apple is working on?

Well, i have an update.

After few reboots and connecting to original Apple power charger via lightning cable, iphone started to recognize my second smart battery case (also was replaced with replacement program and had absolutely the same problems as another one replaced). Now it is charged fully to 100% as well as iPhone.

Note please also, I have disabled “battery charging optimization” in addition to latest public beta IOS14.5 now during these attempts.

Hi, I have the same problem i believe since last update (unfortunately, i created my smart battery case replacement request being on IOS 14.2 and when replacement case arrived i just updated my iphone XS to 14.4).


We did try in Apple store together with Genius two different cases (one was replacement case, another - retail, brand new box opened by me) - both has the same behaviour: out of iPhone showing full charge, weared on iPhone - not charging phone, showing empty battery.

Also when i put it on wireless charger (weared on iPhone) it tries all the time 'reconnect' phone to battery, so, screen is waking up all the time.

Did not you get any story developement with your service request?

No I did not get my issue resolved . I’m having the same problem with my Smartcase. This issue has been going on over a month for me. Apple has been completely unresponsive. I’m sorry but I’ve dealt with a lot of companies and Apple is not flexible nor helpful . There are many issues I have with customer service. Quite frankly, I don’t think they care one bit about my resolving the issue I have with the smart case . I would rather not spend another $1 on another Apple product if I can help it. At this point, they told me that since I have an IPhone X the case I bought was never compatible. I bought the case back in April 2020 and have always used the smartcases for years with my other phones. They won’t give me my money back, not even and in store credit. When I call they say all they can do is send a replacement since it’s under warranty even though they know it won’t work. I’ve had to shut down my phone and reload all the apps. When call Apple, I have to re explain my story, they keep no notes in their accounts, so I simple feel like they are blowing me off. At this point , I spoke with one of the senior support managers Kevin. He is supposed to sent me a charger and case for my phone , these are just items I had to pick real quick from the Apple store , just do I can maybe get something after paying $129 for an case I’m told won’t work , this is because they won’t give me my money back . I don’t trust that I will get these items . So no right now I’m without a case.
