Carplay without charging

I have a new iPhone 12 pro max and don't want to damage my battery by constantly having it charged to over 80%.

I have a long ride to work, and use maps and podcast/music all the time.

I only have usb carplay in my truck, and the battery often doesn't drain below 80% through the day and then tops right up while on my way home.

I would like to disable charging while on carplay when not needed. Is this possible?

iPhone 12 Pro Max, iOS 14

Hello Roadwarrrior,

It sounds like you are concerned about charging your battery over 80% and want to disable charging when using CarPlay.

While you don't have the ability to disable charging when using CarPlay, here are some resources that can help with your battery:

  • Why Lithium-ion?
    • "There’s no need to let it discharge 100% before recharging. Apple lithium-ion batteries work in charge cycles. You complete one charge cycle when you’ve used (discharged) an amount that equals 100% of your battery’s capacity — but not necessarily all from one charge."

  • About Optimized Battery Charging on your iPhone
    • "With iOS 13 and later, Optimized Battery Charging is designed to reduce the wear on your battery and improve its lifespan by reducing the time your iPhone spends fully charged. When the feature is enabled, your iPhone will delay charging past 80% in certain situations. "

Hope this information helps.

Have a good day.
