Big Sur on 2017 iMac Slow Startup and lack of app response

My iMac has begun to be really slow on startup - up to 3 minutes to boot and populate the desktop. That's one issue. The other - once loaded, I, for example, can click on the Safari icon in the dock. The icon will bounce briefly and then stop. I click again on the icon, but the app will not open. Any help appreciated.

First, let me say that there is no reason to ever install or run any 3rd party "cleaning", "optimizing", "speed-up", anti-virus, VPN or security apps on your Mac.  This user tip describes what you need to know and do in order to protect your Mac: Effective defenses against malware and other threats - Apple Community

That being said you've installed quite a few "junk" ware onto your iMac, which by the way was the slowest iMac offered by Apple at the time of purchase, 8 GB of RAM and a 5400 rpm fusion drive.

You should uninstall CleanMyMac, ccleamer. Sophos, Avast and McAfee software according to the developer's instructions. I'm surprised you iMac even runs with all that crapware on it.

Your report shows that you've also installed these two apps:

2021-01-24 AntiMalware (3.4)

2021-01-24 WebProtection (4.2.2)

I don't know what they are but as I first said they are not necessary so uninstall them if installed. I don't see any other mention of it in the report so if you haven't run them don't and delete them. I don't see any other mention of them in the report so if you haven't installed/run them don't and delete them.

Once uninstalled fou can check to see if you've removed all of the supporting files by downloading and running the shareware Find Any File to search for any files with the application's name  and the developer's name in the file name.  For the mentioned software you'd do the following search(es):

1 - Name contains cleanmymac

2 - Name contains mcafee

3 - Name contains avast

4 - Name contains ccleaner

5 - Name contains sophos

Any files that are found can be dragged from the search results window to the Desktop or Trash bin in the Dock for deletion.

FAF can search areas that Spotlight can't like invisible folders, system folders and packages.

You also have some adware installed so download and run the free version of Malwarebytes. It was developed by a long time contributor to these forums and a highly respected member of the computer security community.

Download and run Etrecheck. Etrecheck is a diagnostic tool that was developed by one of the most respected users here in the ASC and recommended by Apple Support  to provide a snapshot of the system and help identify the more obvious culprits that can adversely affect a Mac's performance.

Copy the report

and use the Additional Text button to include the report in your reply.

IMPORTANT:

Before running Etrecheck assign Full Disk Access to Etrecheck in the Etrecheck's Privacy preference pane so that it can get additional information from the Console and log files for the report:

Also click and read the About info to further permit full disk access.

Then we can examine the report and see if we can determine what might be causing the problem.
