macOS Big Sur won't show in my applications folder when downloaded.

Why doesnt macOS Big Sur show up in my applications folder when downloaded , but it says up to date when I click "about this Mac"? I am trying to convert Big Sur to a portable usb for an ssd change but it is not possible if it wont download to my applications because terminal cannot read the apple link that is given.

Where are you downloading the installer from? If it's from the App Store it should be in the Applications folder. If from the System/Software Update preference pane we're not given the change to save it. It installs and delete itself automatically.

If you're able to locate the download, the following resource should help with creating a bootable installer: How to create a bootable installer for macOS. As quoted from this resource, "These download to your Applications folder as an app named Install macOS [version name]. If the installer opens after downloading, quit it without continuing installation. To get the correct installer, download from a Mac that is using macOS Sierra 10.12.5 or later, or El Capitan 10.11.6."
