kindle app crashes every time opened on os x11.1 (Catalina)

Does anyone know of a fix? I downloaded the kindle app again and installed it. No help. Interestingly every time I open a book in the app and I reopen after the inevitable crash there is a new blank book with nothing in it and nothing on the cover. I am at the point where I am not going to even try to use the app any more on my mac.
