Since iOS 14.4 update - unable to verify camera

My iPhone 12 Pro was purchased directly from Apple and has never been repaired. Why would I be receiving the message “Unable to verify this iPhone has a genuine Apple camera?”

iPhone 12 Pro, iOS 14

Well guys, I brought my camera in to the Apple store and had it fixed. They fixed it for free. It was a genuine apple camera, too. They said it probably came to me broken and the update just triggered the software to stop working properly when it found the problem. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Still kind of annoying with it being only 2 1/2 months old.

I took brook1105’s advice and went and got my phone fixed today. It was a hardware issue. They fixed it for free. Probably took a total of 2 hours including waiting in line (despite the fact that I had a Genius Bar appointment set up), hardware evaluation, and the actual phone repair itself. Was free because my phone was still covered on the limited warranty that came with the purchase.

If only it was that easy! I have the same problem: iPhone 12 pro bought directly from Apple store UK never been serviced, less than 12 months old and still under warranty. After installing IOS 15 I suddenly get the Important Camera Warning: Unable to verify genuine Apple camera. Camera works fine but cannot get rid of warning. Phoned Apple support who ran remote diagnostics and said camera needed to be replaced. Told me to make an appointment at local Apple store and they would replace it while I wait under warranty. After long trip get to Apple Bromley they run diagnostics again and tell me Apple wants the phone sending back to depot and I'll have to wait a week for it. They are just not interested in what Apple Support had promised. So far as the store are concerned the wasted trip and weeks inconvenience are just my problem.

Apple Support did suggest that if I took it to an approved repairer rather than an Apple Store they might well have replaced it while I waited under warranty without the need to send it back. I have been a life long Apple fan but am becoming dismayed by the poor quality of service and unhelpful store staff attitude.

I figured out a way around the Portrait mode problem until I take my phone in to Apple! Last night I turned my phone off with the camera app still open while on Portrait in selfie mode with the background completely blurred. Turned phone back on and when I opened the camera mode, everything at first still seemed the same however when I selected Portrait, I changed the zoom from 2.5 that it opens in automatically to 1.0 and, then scrolled through a few of the lighting effects such as natural, studio and contour lighting back to natural. When I went back to natural, then the functions were highlighted in yellow allowing the pic to be taken in HD and, the effects then worked as they’re supposed to.

When I flipped to selfie-mode or, closed out of my camera app, the original problem returned. But, without having to turn off my phone again, I just had to zoom to 1.0 again in Portrait mode and then scroll through a couple of the lighting effects (natural, studio, contour) and when back to natural effect, the Portrait mode worked again as desired!

When in Portrait mode, it’s not supposed to zoom in under normal circumstances. Despite the number changing to 2.5 zoom, the image doesn’t zoom in closer anyway.

I have a feeling the various camera modes automatically opening zoomed in is what’s causing a glitch and making the Portrait mode to not function properly because somehow when changing the zoom from 2.5 to 1.0 manually, the portrait mode functions seem to be accessible as per normal.

Let me know if the trick works out the same for you, Brook. You may not even have to turn your phone off initially with the camera app open like I had done. I suspect just changing the zoom number to 1.0 and scrolling through lighting effects might be sufficient.

The verification message remains however as there’s still a problem with the camera malfunctioning and, it’s still annoying having to take the extra steps but, at least it’s a way around the problem until I can take my phone to Apple.

Footnote: if anyone goes to Apple with camera issues, what was their suggested resolution? Phone sent away for servicing or, phone replacement? If replaced, did they replace it under manufacturer’s one year warranty or, consider it your 1st phone replacement of 2 under your purchased Apple Care?

I’ve been having same exact issue. Portrait Mode is not working properly since I purchased it a few weeks ago. Feautures only work in selfie mode. And, when I use regular photo mode, it always opens up 2x zoomed. Annoying as heck. Since update, I also get the message saying it can’t verify the camera is genuine. Phone has never been opened/repaired ... it’s brand new!

The same issue is appearing on My iPhone 12 pro with iOS 14.6.

The back camera stopped working, just a black screen. Front camera was working fine. Then I rebooted the phone, both front and back camera started working but I'm now getting the "Unable to verify this iPhone has a genuine Apple camera" message.

I think this is a software issue, but Apple support want to take my phone for 1 week while they look into the problem.
