*Two* com.apple.PowerManagement.plist files?

I'm trying to troubleshoot a sleep problem with my mid-2012 MacBook Pro, running MacOS 10.12.6, that I think may be related to Energy Saver, and checked to see what my com.apple.PowerManagement.plist settings are... only to find I have two such files in /Library/Preferences/

I'm wondering if that's normal, or indicates something's gone wrong.

Both have the same Last Modified date & time (about ten hours ago, in case that matters).

The first is named com.apple.PowerManagement.plist

and its contents are:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>

<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">

<plist version="1.0">

<dict>

<key>AC Power</key>

<dict>

<key>Disk Sleep Timer</key>

<integer>0</integer>

<key>Display Sleep Timer</key>

<integer>30</integer>

<key>Display Sleep Uses Dim</key>

<integer>1</integer>

<key>System Sleep Timer</key>

<integer>90</integer>

<key>Wake On LAN</key>

<integer>1</integer>

</dict>

<key>Battery Power</key>

<dict>

<key>Disk Sleep Timer</key>

<integer>0</integer>

<key>Display Sleep Timer</key>

<integer>10</integer>

<key>Display Sleep Uses Dim</key>

<integer>1</integer>

<key>ReduceBrightness</key>

<integer>1</integer>

<key>System Sleep Timer</key>

<integer>15</integer>

</dict>

<key>SystemPowerSettings</key>

<dict>

<key>Update DarkWakeBG Setting</key>

<true/>

</dict>

</dict>

</plist>

The second is named com.apple.PowerManagement.22637973-BC65-5D17-B101-3F9F762669D4.plist

and its contents are:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>

<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">

<plist version="1.0">

<dict>

<integer>1</integer>

<key>Hibernate File</key>

<string>/var/vm/sleepimage</string>

<key>Hibernate Mode</key>

<integer>3</integer>

<key>Mobile Motion Module</key>

<integer>1</integer>

<integer>0</integer>

<key>Standby Enabled</key>

<integer>1</integer>

<key>TTYSPreventSleep</key>

<integer>1</integer>

<key>Wake On AC Change</key>

<integer>0</integer>

<key>Wake On Clamshell Open</key>

<integer>1</integer>

</dict>

<key>Battery Power</key>

<dict>

<key>AutoPowerOff Delay</key>

<integer>14400</integer>

<key>AutoPowerOff Enabled</key>

<integer>1</integer>

<key>Hibernate File</key>

<string>/var/vm/sleepimage</string>

<key>Hibernate Mode</key>

<integer>3</integer>

<key>Mobile Motion Module</key>

<integer>1</integer>

<key>Standby Delay</key>

<integer>4200</integer>

<key>Standby Enabled</key>

<integer>1</integer>

<key>TTYSPreventSleep</key>

<integer>1</integer>

<key>Wake On AC Change</key>

<integer>0</integer>

<key>Wake On Clamshell Open</key>

<integer>1</integer>

</dict>

<key>BatteryWarn</key>

<dict>

<key>W034344BCD3LC</key>

<integer>1325376039</integer>

</dict>

</dict>

</plist>

The specific problem is that several times a day it suddenly goes to what I at first thought was sleep, but realize now is either hibernation or safe sleep, since it won't wake up on a keypress, but if I wait a minute or two (presumably while it writes the contents of RAM to the SSD), I can then press the power button briefly and it in a couple seconds it will return to normal exactly as it was before. While this can happen at a time when the computer is just sitting idle, it can also happen while I'm in the middle of using it, including in the middle of typing a sentence. Very annoying! I've reset the SMC and NVRAM twice each, but it still happens. Which is what led me to go looking at that Energy Saver plist. Or rather, plists!

Thanks for listening to my longwinded question :^)

Hey there jimmosk,

We'd like to help get your Mac to run smoothly and not go to sleep, especially since you mentioned still using it when it puts itself to sleep.

Great job trying those two resets! Let's continue ruling out some other possible causes:

  1. While you don't need to have the latest compatible macOS version installed for your Mac, we recommend that you have the latest updates for the currently installed macOS. Here's how to first Back up your Mac with Time Machine, and afterwards, here's How to update the software on your Mac.
  2. Does the issue remain in safe mode? What about when restarting normally after testing safe mode? This link shows how to Start up your Mac in safe mode.
  3. To test for this in a new user, check out the steps under 'Add a user' here: Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac
  4. This link will list the steps to Use Apple Diagnostics to test your Mac.
