Import SVG to Keynote

I have seen this question asked in the past, and until just few weeks ago I could import any SVG with just drag and drop, but now, every time that I try it it says "The image type is not supported on this device".

I have seen tutorials about how to convert them into PDF so they keep being vector images, but this is not good enough: I cannot change the color of the shapes.

Currently, the only option that works is opening OpenOffice, add the SVG to the OpenOffice, right click on the image and convert into a polygon/curve, save as PPT, open with Keynote, and voila. But it is slow and tedious.

So, If any can help:

  • How it stopped to work? (an update? a bug?)
  • How I can fix it?
  • Is there any plugin (no matter if it is paying) to add editable SVGs to Keynote?
  • Is there any serious alternative to Keynote (OpenOffice does not feels good, and Powerpoint or Google Slides neither support SVG)

Keynote version 10.3.9 (7029.9.8)

  1. Keynote has never been able to import SVG files
  2. Keynote is unable to import SVG images
  3. Keynote does not support plugins
  4. Libra Office

Two options I use:

One

Import the SVG file into Inkscape (free open source application)

edit the graphic for size, position, shape and colour changes

export as a PDF file as a vector graphic

Two

Open in Libra Office edit the SVG file eg change colour

Export to PDF as a vector graphic

example showing colour change of an SVG file:

To be clear, as Keynote does not support SVG files, the only vector graphic image that can be imported is a PDF file which has limitless upscaling.

Once Inkscape 1.0.2 (current) is installed into the /Applications folder, one can also use it as a Terminal command-line converter too.

/Applications/Inkscape.app/Contents/MacOS/Inkscape --help
/Applications/Inkscape.app/Contents/MacOS/Inkscape --export-filename=foo.pdf ~/Pictures/awake.svg

I soft-linked into a local bin directory, and access it as inkscape.
