Problem pairing with Watch

I’ve purchased a used watch online and it will not pair with my iPhone. My updates have been completed, yet my phone says it is not connected to the internet.

iPhone 6s Plus, iOS 14

Thank you for posting in the Apple Support Communities. We understand you are unable to pair your Apple Watch with your iPhone.


"If you can't set up your Apple Watch or you get an error message


  1. Make sure that your iPhone has the latest version of iOS.
  2. Turn off your iPhone and turn it back on.
  3. Turn off your Apple Watch and turn it back on. "

I have tried this and more without success. When pairing, my phone (6S +, iOS version 14.4) says there is an update for Watch but it cannot be completed because I’m not connected to the internet. This is a farce because it is. I chatted with support to troubleshoot for about an hour to no avail. I’m beyond frustrated. Question: what is the VPN and is there any relevance to it and my problem?
