reset smc after memory update

do you have to update the SMC on my MacBook Pro (Early, 2011)after upgrading memory. My computer keep restarting after I updated my memory.

You do not have to reset the SMC. But an SMC Reset makes no permanent changes -- it just makes certain the main Processor, battery processor and System Management Controller all start over, at the same time. SMC Reset can't hurt anything.


If all the RAM is correctly recognized, and you are having random restarts, it sounds like you may have installed RAM that is slower, FASTER, or different spec than what is required. MacBook Pro is not very flexible in memory timing, and very fussy, and needs EXACT correct spec RAM.
