Can't access Time Capsule Disk's files in File Explorer (Win 10)

Hello,

My TC is 4th gen model, 2TB.

For years I've been using it as an external storage on WIN10, since I don't have a macbook anymore.

Recently I got a new computer and moved my TC to it. Installed it the same way I always did, the internet connection is working perfectly and I can even access the TC Disk in File Explorer, but it's empty, all my folders and archives seem to be gone. But accessing the device through Airport Utility, it says that just 0.6TB of 1.8TB is available, so it means that my archives are still in there somehow, right?

I noticed too that the Airport Utility has an option to move all my data to an USB storage, but obv I don't have any device close to 1.2TB. Isn't there a way to access this data just using my computer?

As I said, I always used the TC as a router and as an external storage, never connected it to my old macbook for backups and etc. I've been keeping important files there since 2015, and I hope I didn't lost them bc I don't have an extra copy of most archives.

All files I had on the TC came from PCs (not any Mac) and those were organized in different folders.

Those weren't actually backups, but pdfs archives, images, videos and ms office docs.

There is basically nothing I can think of that would prevent you seeing files if they were all copied from the PC.

As long as the TC is showing all the space you expect is used.. then it is permissions type problem.

Let's say due to moving to a new computer there are some differences.. let me high recommend you turn on Guest Access.

Doing this has enabled me to access files on basically any TC disk.

I am using 5.6 utility on Mac but from PC it is identical.. with different fonts.. etc.

If you go to the Disks tab, File Sharing.. by default Airport Disk Guest Access is Not Allowed.. change it to Read and Write.. and click update. This may have multiple affects I cannot predict. But it does offer one easy way out of your problem.. IF IT WORKS!! So far it has not caused other issues and has been 100% successful.. also it is very fast.. several seconds only.

The other scenario is if you setup sharing with users.. that can easily get messed up. If you are sharing just using default password or a disk access password but without users then it does not matter.

The Time Capsule uses SMBv1 protocols to communicate with other devices.

Microsoft dropped SMBv1 from Windows 10 for security reasons, so you won't be able to access the hard drive or data on the Time Capsule hard drive unless you enable SMBv1 on your PC......if Microsoft will still allow this option. More information here:

It worked! It was set to share with users, so I switched it to default (device) password and my folders showed up in File Explorer.

Thanks for your help and attention!

Try to copy a few small files as a test from your PC to the Time Capsule disk and then see if you can access them again using the PC.

Make sure that File Sharing is enabled under the Disk tab in AirPort Utility 5.6.1 for Windows.

Sorry, I do not have a PC here to test, so I will not be able to much on this.

If you do have access to a Mac, post back for more instructions on how to access the Time Capsule hard disk that way. Whether or not the Mac will be able to read PC files on the Time Capsule is an open question.

I could find the disk in File Explorer, but it's empty.

If you copied files from Mac to the TC and hope to open them on PC the job is much harder lately as Apple greatly increased security. You need to create a folder (directory) on the TC.. and then copy files into that folder from the Mac or PC.. then the PC should be able to open them.

There are also ways and means to change the permissions and get guest level read access.

What files are you looking for? e.g. Time Machine backups are useless.. they cannot be used on PC.

If you give us example of exactly what you are attempting to do we can give you more accurate info on how it works.

For a starter.. create a folder on the TC and copy a few files into it and check if you can read them.. that will establish you have write and read access to the TC.. and then you can check if you can see those files on a Mac.

I just tried what you said, and it worked. I created different folders and copied into them files like the ones I had, and they were visible and readable. But I did it only on my PC, I don't own a Mac anymore.
