Disable autoplaying of music/audible in Carplay

I use Carplay on my Apple iPhone X connected to my Honda Clarity for navigation and other apps. Sometimes I like to listen to music or an audible book. But every time I plug in my phone, Carplay immediately starts playing my most recent song or audiobook, which sometimes I *don't* want, particularly if I have other people in the car. How can I disable the autoplaying without disabling my ability to play music or audiobook when I want to start them, and (obviously) without disabling Carplay altogether, since I rely on this for navitation. Apple provides so many choices for how to customize your user experience, that I am really surprised that they have not provided the choice to select whether or not you want Carplay to automatically start your music or not. Help!

Hey there kamichan,

We understand you'd like to disable audio autoplay when connecting your iPhone to your car, and we'd like to see if we can assist.

It is expected behavior for the audio to play automatically when connected. While there isn't a way to disable this on the iPhone, you can reach out to your car manufacturer to see if there are any options on their end. Learn more about CarPlay here: Use CarPlay with your iPhone

You can also submit feedback regarding this here: Product Feedback

Cheers!

I guess my question is, WHY does Apple think this expected behavior? Here's what I base my expectations on:

  • With my car radio, if it was off when I last used the car, it remains off when I next use the car.
  • With my bluetooth headset, if I wasn't playing music when I connect, it doesn't start playing music when I connect.

So this behavior is the opposite of expected for me. At least can't Apple give us a toggle switch to enable or disable autoplaying of audio with Carplay?

This seems entirely on Apple's side, not the car manufacturer. Why are you sending me back to the car manufacturer for something that is the behavior of an Apple product?

I have the same issue with CarPlay continually defaulting to Audiobooks, even after a different audio option has been selected on the vehicle entertainment system. I don't even have loaded, or use audiobooks.

I find this incredibly distracting, having to shift my focus and attention from driving to reselecting the radio station I am trying to listen too.

I am concerned that this continual distraction may increase the risk of crash caused by unwanted distraction.

My vehicle is an almost new Mitsubishi but has no Sat Nav so CarPlay is handy for navigation purposes. I am aware of several others with a similar complaint.
