I was importing loads of photos. Now Photos crashed and I cannot quit from it. The little red dot in the upper left corner is colored dark red and is inactive. It prevents me from shutting down Photos but the computer at the same time.

Since it sounds like everything is goofed, press and hold the power button on the back of the iMac until the screen goes off. Then, turn it back on.
TIP: Import photos in smaller batches! :-)

Is there a reason you had to shut down or a reason you did not use the Force Quit feature? If you are not familiar with Force Quit please click https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201276#:~:text=Press%20these%20three%20keys%20together,window%20and%20click%20Force%20Quit.
Sometimes just use Force-Quit from beneath Apple Menu..
..Then choose the failed software ~ which may appear stalled
&' force-quit' just one; it works without restarting the macOS.

Hi, actually I'm an iMac novice. I switched from Windows based machinery recently and currently climbing the learning curve.
Totally understand, I think most of us here were switchers at one time or another. Welcome to the light side and enjoy your new Mac.
I cannot quit Photos. The quit icon is colored dark red and does not react. As a consequence I cannot shut down my iMac. Help.
