I am looking to get my grandson set up with a digital camera but his parents do not want him to have a cell phone. He and I are doing photo projects together weekly and it would be good if he had all the same tools I have. (I'm using an iPhone and Snapseed which is compatible.) Would it work to get him a rebuilt iPhone without the SIM card? I'm not sure I understand what the SIM card does. Thanks

You can also get an iPhone, but it will need a SIM to activate it. Once activated you can remove the SIM. The SIM card contains the information needed to assign a phone number and connect to the cellular network.

It’s always best to get the newest in a product line, as it will have the longest support. One difference to note is that iPhones from the 8 and up have a 12MP camera; the iPod is only 8 MP.
Thanks - that's helpful. I know the iPad is not the thing since the idea is to equip him with something in his pocket. But the iPod sounds like a good idea. I've looked at some refurbished...and read about iPod5 having some limitations but iPod6 and above being pretty good. Got advice on that? Thanks.
