Apple Watch won’t connect

So my friend gave me her old Apple Watch cuz she got a new one And I’ve been trying to get it to pair to my phone (yes I have an iPhone) and my phone is connected to WiFi but I don’t know if the watch has to be or not and it needs to update and it won’t so I’m not sure what to do please help
