iPhone tri-tone notification for no reason

Hello,

Since this morning I'm getting a tri-tone notification sound on my iPhone 12 Pro without any banner or any other indication, at the frequency typically of an SMS coming in and you've not responded (so once every 2 minutes or so?). FYI, Tri-tone is the default tone for a text message.

I restarted my iPhone, to no avail.

Researching this, one of the (typical) suggestions was to do an iOS upgrade, so I upgraded my iOS to 14.4. And you know what? The phantom notification sound survived that, it keeps doing it. Restarted my phone again after that, no difference.

I've checked all my apps, NONE of them is set to give only sounds and no banners, so there seem to be no reason to suspect a specific app. Also, no difference if iPhone is awake or not, on locked screen or not, or just operational.

Does anyone have a good suggestion? If this keeps going on, there's an iPhone heading for high orbit.

Update:

I turned notifications on/off (or off/on) for all apps, to kinda force iOS to re-read the notification settings for that app, didn't help.
I started looking critically what apps are installed on my phone, trashed some, unfortunately not the cause
I started looking critically at those apps that can give sound notifications and started turning some of those off... And one of the apps may have been the culprit, no clue which one, but now it has stopped. Or it was a coincidence and whatever caused it (not necessarily an app) stopped causing it?

Any further insights into this are welcome, as I've found I'm not alone with this bug. Some form of easier diagnosis or a temporary reset or somesuch might be useful.

I had the same on both my iPhone and iPad. Doubt any app was the issue as I was also switching notifications off and on on both devices and it suddenly stopped on both devices while I had switched off notifications for different apps on each device.

So guess it was some issue on Apple-side.

Hi @kujac thanks for your answer. I have the same feeling, it's not some app. It's something iOS or on Apple's cloud side. Access to more information would help.
