My iMac has frozen during the software update to Big Sur. how do I fix it?

The first step is to wait. Give the update at least 4 hours first. If it has been that long, try this:
- Turn off the iMac by pressing and holding the power button.
- Wait 10 seconds.
- Turn the iMac back on, and see if it completes.
- If it still does not, try Safe Mode: Start up your Mac in safe mode - Apple Support
