Cannot update from Big Sur 11.1 to 11.2

I am unable to update to the 11.2 Big Sur version on my M1 MacBook Air because the authenticator won't accept my password. Any idea as to why? (The password is correct as I can use it for any other administrator function).

Hey there, gjen54.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities. Keeping your macOS up-to-date is vital, so we can understand why you’d want to resolve the issue with being able to enter your password to update to 11.2.

We know that you mentioned that your login password works for other functions, but please change your password and try to update again: Change or reset the password of a macOS user account

We hope this helps! Don’t hesitate to reach back out if you have further questions.

All the best.

To Harry L, GLSLB and others experiencing this problem,

If you have not resolved your issue try the fix that worked for me - complete erase and reinstall of BigSur. The reinstall "installed" 11.2.1 and the software update alert was gone. It wasn't until yesterday when 11.2.2 was released that I was able to test the fix. The password authenticator worked correctly and the new version was perfectly installed. I don't believe this latest release had a fix for our specific problem. I suspect that our download files got corrupted somehow and the erase and reinstall removed the corrupted files.

I have the exact same problem on my M1 MacBook Pro 13".

I have an admin account and after downloading 11.2 it asks for my password to restart. I enter it correctly, and the dialog box just shakes as if I entered it incorrectly. I do it again, ensuring it is correct. Once again, it won't accept it.

I tried what you suggested by changing the password. Same thing. Other functions where I enter my password work correctly (logging in, creating a new user, updating apps, etc).

I also tried creating another user with admin rights. Same problem.

I've tried resetting the SMC, no luck. I've tried booting in to safe mode, no luck.

How do I fix this?

I’m the same. 13” MacBook Pro M1 running 11.1. The 11.2 upgrade downloads fine. When it asks for a password to reboot and complete the install, the password is not accepted. The same password works to log in and change settings. It only fails for the update.

I changed the account password and created a separate new admin account. Neither worked.

Is there another way to update?
