VPN Connection on M1 MacBook Air

I connect to various printers, computers and such at work from home using a VPN. My new M1 MBA makes a connection, but I cannot ssh into computers, connect to printer web pages, or even ping devices on the work network. Using my 2017 MBP, with the same macOS version and sign in credentials connecting from home works flawlessly. Initially, I put the VPN credentials in manually, but after determining that there was problems, I exported my VPN settings from the MBP. Same connection problems. I see some issues with M1 Macs with people using VPN services, but haven't found any solution. Is there an issue with VPN connections on M1 Macs, is there something I need to do at my end, or is it a result of some configuration at the VPN server side? Thanks for any insight.

Using a different VPN is not an option. My employer uses Meraki, I connect using built-in Apple VPN services. These services work fine with my MacBook Pro Intel, but do not with my M1 MacBook Air. This is not an Internet based VPN connection nor is it a method to circumvent geographical restrictions, it is part of my work.

Update. If the checkbox for Send All Traffic Over VPN is checked, I can make a proper connection with the M1 MBA. This is not necessary on my 2017 MBP though. The M1 does not appear to deal with the split tunnel in the same manner. I attempted adding an entry to the routing tables, but was not successful yet. The trace route shows that this traffic is attempting to go via my ISP, not through the VPN.

We use Meraki for our VPN. This article https://documentation.meraki.com/MX/Client_VPN/Configuring_Split_Tunnel_Client_VPN states that the VPN traffic must all go through the VPN and that the split tunnel configuration requires additions to the routing table. This seems odd since it works either way with my MacBook Pro. I did try adding the necessary entries to the routing table anyway, but this process was unsuccessful for me so far. I'm not really sure what made it start working, when sending all traffic through the VPN, as I'm sure I had the checkbox checked the first times I was fighting with this issue.
