iPhone storage discrepancy

Hey all. I just bought my wife a new iPhone 12 256GB. Her old phone, (iPhone 7+)which was also a 256GB, said she had 137GB available. After setting up her new phone and transferring all the data, the new phone is saying there is only 4GB available.

There are a ton of photos on it. The old one says it’s only 7GB worth and the new one says it’s 110GB worth. Is the old phone misinterpreting how many gigs worth of photos there is? Are they compressed?

Hey joedvasquez,

Sounds like you recently transferred data to a new iPhone, however the photos are taking up more space than expected.

This is likely due to one of the phones storing the majority of the photo data on iCloud, and the new one having the full resolution photos downloaded locally to the device.

To resolve this, go to Settings > Photos and ensure iCloud Photos is enabled and set to "Optimize iPhone Storage" to reduce the storage your photos are taking up locally. For more info, check out the "Save space on your device" section here: Set up and use iCloud Photos

We hope this information helps out.

Take care!
