Keyboards - Macbook Pro 13" (2019) vs Macbook Pro 13" M1 (2020)

Hello everyone

I have purchased a new Macbook Pro M1. Its seems great and whilst I have not put its much touted speed to the test the battery life is a noticeable improvement... lasts all day.

However I find the keyboard a backward step as regards how it feels. Whilst the keyboard is a different layout i.e. the ESC and Touch ID buttons are separated from the Touch Bar which is welcomed; I feel that pressing the keys is different and had assumed it was identical to the previous generation of Macbook Pro - which I liked very much.

I find it less comfortable to type on as you have to press each key further down and with more force. It just feels spongier and more of a chore to type upon. You can even see the height difference between the keys in the pictures below. Why did they change this? Does it use the same mechanism? It feels like it has went back a step - as far back at the Macbook Pros of 2014!

Also the technical specifications also state the Macbooks are the same thickness - I have laid them side by side on a flat dining table and they are not - the M1 is thicker.

The design was changed, your observations are spot on. The older and most recent Macs use a scissor mechanism, the ones in between used a butterfly mechanism.

They returned to scissor keys because the butterfly mechanism was prone to failure, enough so that Apple replaces them for free out-of-warranty:

I thought as much... thought my mind was playing tricks on me. Thanks for the confirmation.

I actually prefer the scissor mechanism... feels way better to type on. However if they are prone to breaking then I wouldnt have been so happy if it happened to me.

I have given my previous Macbook to my wife so providing that link above is handy incase there is ever an issue with the keys.

Perhaps they will return to using the scissor mechanism in the 2021 refresh of the Macbook Pro 13" when it comes later in the year.
