Single key Mail shortcuts?

I really miss the single character shortcuts from other apps. How can I assign single, unadorned characters to shortcuts for Mail?


It seems as though System Preferences -> Keyboard -> Shortcuts -> App Shortcuts only allows for chorded shortcuts.


Somehow, requiring two hands and a 3 or 4-key chord doesn't seem to me like much of a shortcut for something that I use constantly like "Archive".

You can change the shortcut for Archive using System Preferences->Keyboard->Shortcuts if you wish.

But you need to be careful not to use some that is already in use, or is a standard in macOS, like Command-A (Select All).

Of course, many shortcuts are already taken, but you could use, say:
