I really miss the single character shortcuts from other apps. How can I assign single, unadorned characters to shortcuts for Mail?
It seems as though System Preferences -> Keyboard -> Shortcuts -> App Shortcuts only allows for chorded shortcuts.
Somehow, requiring two hands and a 3 or 4-key chord doesn't seem to me like much of a shortcut for something that I use constantly like "Archive".

It's not. But the archive "shortcut" is three.
If it can't be done in Mail, then it can't be done. I'll keep looking for another MUA or work harder at getting Thunderbird to work in my current context.

Can you give some examples? Apple apps all normally use 2 or 3 keys in my experience.
You probably need an app like Keyboard Maestro to do things differently.
You can change the shortcut for Archive using System Preferences->Keyboard->Shortcuts if you wish.
But you need to be careful not to use some that is already in use, or is a standard in macOS, like Command-A (Select All).
Of course, many shortcuts are already taken, but you could use, say:

Yes, and that's a nuisance, IMO.
Both Airmail and Thunderbird offer single character commands for common tasks like "Archive" and "Reply". I've been using single character email commands for over four decades now. Switching to a four key chord just isn't in my future. I can't live with that kind of toil for long.

AFAIK, that gesture has no other semantic in Mail. Even the search box requires a click before it's active.
