Big Sur Finder .CR3 Support for Canon R5

I see in the latest update of macOS Big Sur 11.2 of 2nd February that Canon EOS R5 camera .CR3 files are supported.

However, I still cannot see these files in Finder. Anybody with the same issue ?

Interestingly, after downloading the image files to my MacBook (Catalina) and then copy those files to the iMac (Big Sur) I can handle and open the .CR3 files as if there was never any issue! It's a cumbersome workaround but all I've got right now.

That said, there seems to be some kind of a Canon EOS M50 Mk. 2 card formatting thing going on, probably the true basis of my problems: Images shot as .JPG also will open on the MacBook but won't open on the iMac.

FYI:

Yeah, between Canon and Apple there apparently needs to be communication.

  • My MacBook is running on macOS Catalina and CAN work with Canon .CR3 files.
  • My iMac is running on mac OS Big Sur and CANNOT work with Canon .CR3 files straight from the camera -- Finder can't copy or move the files, Photoshop cannot open them, nor can Photoshop open .JPG files taken by the camera.
  • Both machines are running the current updated version of Adobe Photoshop.
  • If I download files from the camera's .CR3 files from the memory card to the MacBook, then transfer the files to the iMac, the iMac is able to use the files with no problem.
  • Appears to possibly be an issue with the Canon's formatting of the camera's card wherin the MacBook reads files but the iMac sees them as incomplete or corrupt.

Hi ImperialEagle,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. We understand that you are not able to see files from your Canon camera in Finder.

As you mentioned, your camera and RAW format is supported in macOS Big Sur. Since this is a new change that occurred, you might have a corresponding firmware update from Canon. We'd recommend reaching out to them to see if a firmware update is available for your camera. Canon contact information can be found in the paperwork that came with your camera.

Get help with the Photos app on your Mac has some guidance that may help with this issue as well. We also found the following page with an internet search - Canon Help Center.

Take care.

Yeah, I didn’t see it on the linked list which is a bit puzzling — file extension is .cr3 — but the OS does not recognize the file format and I cannot even copy, much less open, those files. As I mentioned, however, my elderly MacBook running on macOS Catalina has no difficulty handling them! Hoping an update will resolve this. BTW: Canon offers no firmware update for this newer little camera — still a ver. 1.0.0
