My HomePod stereo pair stopped working

My HomePod stereo pair stopped working as home theater speakers after working for months. I have reset the Apple TV and each HomePod before connecting them again. It works until I set default speakers for the Apple TV. Then I lose the stereo pair, even for music. The only way to get both speakers working together is to not have them set as the default speakers for the Apple TV. I don't know what's changed or how to get that working properly again. Any suggestions? All devices (ATV and HomePods) are on the latest OS releases (no betas).

Thanks for any suggestions.

Yes, it locks it to the ATV, just as it's supposed to. But I can't get stereo out at all. It doesn't matter if I'm playing a movie, or listening to music. Only one speaker plays. Everything (ATV and two HomePods) knows there is a stereo pair as my home theater speakers. It still only uses one. This worked perfectly until a few days ago when it just mysteriously stopped. That "workaround" shouldn't be necessary. I want the HomePods to be my default speakers.
