Problems moving bookmarks on iPad Air 4 under Safari 14.4

My partner has a lot of bookmarks on her iPad Air 4. these are organised into numerous folders. On a fairly regular basis, she moves folders up or down the list to optimise the order in which the folders are listed.

She regularly finds that, during this process, the folder that she's moving disappears. In some cases, the "missing" folder can be found inside one of the other folders. In other cases, it appears to have been deleted.

In the latter case, she has no option but to re-create all the bookmarks in the folder that has gone missing. She has not got Safari iCloud syncing turned on because of earlier problems with sync not being reliable and causing more problems than it solved - she's not very tech-aware and quickly gets annoyed when things go wrong!

In the former case, it's not too difficult to look through all the other bookmark folders and find where it's gone. However, having found the missing folder, there doesn't appear to be a way to promote it or move it so that it is once again a top-level folder instead of being a sub-folder. To get round the problem, she's been re-creating an empty folder at the top level and then putting the individual bookmarks into that folder.

She's fairly new to the iPad Air 4; her last iPad was an aged original iPad Mini running Safari 9.1. On the iPad Mini the process for moving bookmarks was really elegant. Touching and dragging a bookmark produced a nice, clear blue line that indicated exactly the position into which the moved bookmark would be placed. In comparison, the same process under Safari 14.4 is, frankly, a big step backwards. There's nothing to show where the bookmark will be placed, so it's necessary to drag the bookmark into roughly the right place and then to "wiggle" it slightly up and down in order to get an idea as to where Safari is going to put it. The difference between placing a bookmark BETWEEN two folders or WITHIN one of those folders is almost impossible to determine. The difficulties are further compounded by an apparent lack of an "undo last action" option, at least as far as I can see.

This boils down to four questions:-

Is there an easier way to move bookmark folders without having to rely on the somewhat hit-and-miss process of "wiggling" the folder that's being moved once it's over it's intended destination?

Is there a hidden "undo" feature?

Is there a way to easily promote a bookmark sub-folder back up to the top level (where it was originally)?

Is there a way to recover bookmark folders that have disappeared (been deleted?) without using Safari iCloud syncing.

Any help or guidance would be much appreciated

Many thanks,

Mike

1) Yes. Use the Safari sidebar to arrange your Bookmarks. Follow these steps:

  • If the sidebar is not visible, tap the “book” icon that you’ll find to the left of the address bar; when highlighted as a blue icon, the sidebar will be visible.

  • With the sidebar visible, tap the “book” icon at top-left of the sidebar; this will reveal your saved bookmarks.

  • At bottom-right of the sidebar, tap Edit; this will open the editing view. At the right of each bookmark entry, is a drag-bar icon; simply drag up, or down, to reposition the bookmark. At the left of each bookmark entry is a red delete button; tapping a corresponding button will permanently delete an entry.

  • Tapping on an entry itself opens the bookmark editor.

  • While the bookmark editor is open in the sidebar, you’ll find two buttons at the bottom - New Folder and Done.

  • Also note the blue navigation buttons at the top of the sidebar. With these buttons you can navigate through the various layers of bookmark and favourites folders.

2) There is no Undo feature.

3) See (1).

4) No.
