reset home folder permissions

Hey guys,

Can anyone help me reset my home folder Sharing and Permissions to default.

Couldn't find clear info about this anywhere else.

macOS Catalina 10.15.7

Many thanks!

Lino

Hmmm. Not sure what happened here...

See if this works for you—

Boot from your Recovery by holding down the key combination Command-R at startup.

From the Recovery Desktop select Utilities >> Terminal

In the Terminal window, type:

resetpassword

and press return.

We are not going to reset Password however we are going to Reset ACLs

Reset Password window opens>> select your boot volume if not already selected.

Select your username from the menu, select the user account if not already selected.

Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.

Then from the >>Restart from the dropdown.

Unfortunately didn't work.
Although I think I followed your instructions, couldn't find the option" Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs"
Maybe my OS is all screwed up, which I find unlikely considering this is the recovery partition; or some update changed this feature.

Thanks anyway
Lino

Ok good work

It seems every macOS is shifting and changing this approach.

You can try from the Terminal copy & paste:

diskutil resetUserPermissions

Leave the Home Folder as Read-Only:

I don’t know how the Home folder would have become non-read only, unless you fiddled with its permissions, in which case don’t. If your Home folder is reset, then you might get a messed up install. In all, leave the Home folder as read-only.

Thank you TheLittles

I've tried the command you're mentioning, but it didn't work either, maybe the explanation is in this article I found: https://eclecticlight.co/2020/02/18/repairing-permissions-in-your-home-folder-has-changed/, by the way, the Apple support page mentioned in the article no longer exists.

I don't remember changing the permissions but I'm not sure, considering that I have this account for over 10 years and I just move it between machines with the Migration Assistant.

To partially solve the problem, I created a test account just to check what the correct permissions are for each folder, some folders (for example, Public and Dropbox) have different settings, so I applied these settings to my personal folder, except for the user "staff", who disappeared (to be honest I don't know how important it is, probably very important, being originally in the system). I hope that these manual settings do not interfere with my account security, I would prefer to have it by default.

Thanks

Lino
