Here is an Apple article on that topic: How to free up storage space on your Mac - Apple Support.
You may just have to move some data to an external storage device. Some macOS updates require up to 44 GB free.

Move items like your Photos and Music libraries to an external HD that is formatted like this:
and other large files that you don't need frequently.
Be sure to text the libraries before deleting them from your boot drive.

Rid of Unnecessary Files:
Rid of high volume software that may be unnecessary. Such items include iTunes Movies, TV Shows, and Music along with Virtual Machines.
