Ipad photos

After working fine for many years my ipad ( ipad air 2 14.0.1 ) now only shows 6 photos. It tells me that it is updating 1300+ photos but it never does. My iphone and macbook show all the photos as does icloud.

what can I do? Any help gratefully received.
