AirPods Pro -- loud thumping from each footstep

I cannot use the Airpods Pro -- I can hear each footstep with a loud thump, and if I try to run the deep thudding noise overwhelms anything I'm actually listening to. I went through all the different listening modes and it is similar with each of them -- noise cancellation does not remove the thudding/thumping sound. Anyone else have this problem? Anything to be doing about it?

It looks like there's something called the occlusion effect, from having an earplug basically.

I do not have this problem with normal Airpods. But it would be good to have the water/sweat resistance of the Pro version.
