Unable to Update macOS

Last year I had to use Time Machine to go back to an earlier version of my macOS (High Sierra 10.13.6) because of problems I was having with running Catalina. The thing is, I now cannot update my MacBook Pro software or even macOS. Every time I try to update my MacBook Pro (purchased in November 2016), I get the following error message.

macOS could not be installed on your computer

ERROR_7E&AEE96CA

Quit the installer to restart your computer and try again

At this point, I have tried this multiple times without success. Since the Apple Store is closed near me, I am sitting at home wondering what to do next to fix this problem. Until then I'm stuck at macOS High Sierra Version 10.13.6. Any ideas?

just be sure to read the entire article because you'll have to edit the terminal command if your usb drive and installer are different.

this is a perfect time for me to make a video for those with the same problem us mac users run into. was supposed to for a friend but i just walked him through it.....for three hours. good luck!

backup your hard drive, if you've not invested in an external drive, you should. go to the app store and see if it will let you download an installer for mojave or catalina. if so, make sure that its saved in the utilities folder in the user profile you're booted to. go HERE to copy a terminal command to paste in the terminal shell that will allow your machine to make a boot drive of the OS you have obtained. when completed, boot your mac to recovery, click disk utility, and erase the hard drive. (this is why you've backed up your data) your boot drive should install the os you've made earlier and like magic.....youre back to the operating system you had like nothing ever happened.

i hope that i have explained it correctly, but this support site should have the answers you need to reach your desired os, provided your update is compatible with your machine.
