My 2016 MacBook Pro (space gray) was streaming a webinar (Webinato) I closed the cover but an hour later when I lifted the screen the laptop never came on again. Ever heard of this?

Any time you are near the mains you benefit from being plugged in, especially a streaming app., if you need the portability then battery obviously.
There is no harm being on the mains, your battery will have a longer life/cycle count.
If you are having an issue booting after it has been on the charger for a while,
Try resetting the SMC https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295
Do you recall what the battery health/status was before that? Was the condition "normal" or "get service"? And yes, any battery can die - the warnings would be in the info on your laptop I just asked about.
I've attempted resetting the SMC numerous times but unfortunately nothing. I have a reservation to bring to an authorized service area outside the mall where the Apple store resides. Store is closed here in CA. Maybe they'll disconnect the battery and reconnect? Is that a possibility?
