How to unsync iCloud Drive files from local folder Mobile Documents?

I bought 2TB iCloud Storage, hoping that I can save my design files (quite large) on it, without taking any space on my local hard disk. It appears that any file I upload on iCloud Drive is duplicated (and synced!) locally on my hard disk in Mobile Documents Folder. Please advise how to fix it, without losing the data. Thanks!

That mobile doc folder is hidden for a reason. It "is" your iCloud Drive. Anything there is synced to iCloud, but displayed in Finder as iiCloud Drive. Touch it at your peril.

iCloud is a syncing service not off device storage. To some degree all iCloud Drive is matched between your local device and iCloud itself.

There are some limited optimization options.
