Can't change back Apple ID

Hello, my son has changed the Apple ID from my wife's e-mail to his e-mail. Now we are trying to get it back but we get the message "This email address is not available. Choose a different address." However, when we are trying to login with initial Apple ID, we get the message "the e-mail is invalid or not supported". Could you please advise?
