Have Big Sur 11.2 & 11.2.1 installation problems been sorted?

Hi, I have had problems with this update and version increase hanging at various phases, namely Download and Preparation phase. I had the problem on one MacBook Pro but my other MacBook Pro had no problems.

NOTE: If you are getting an error during download, it maybe that you don't have enough disk space to download it in which case make some room. When downloading it looked like in needs at least 3.7 Gb

The one with the problem also hung with the 11.2.1 version.

I contacted Apple Support when I had the problem with Big Sur 11.2 and the solution to the hanging problem was sorted by installing in Safe Mode. You probably already know this but if you don't, this is how to do it:-

1) Shut down your MacBook Pro.

2) Give it a couple of minutes with the power off (optional but for a couple of minutes its worth it in my opinion).

3) Re power the Mac but as soon as you hear it firing up, press, AND KEEP PRESSED, the Shift key.

4) When booted up and you have got past any log in screen, start the upgrade in the normal way.

For 11.2 and 11.2.1 problems, this worked fine. It takes a while but if it looks like nothing is happening - be patient and put the tip of the mouse pointer at the end of the green download or preparation progress line to see if the progress moves. It may be moving slightly and its un-noticeable. This part took approx 25 minutes.

Then the machine will reboot a few times and then bring you back to the normal screen. This bit took 20 minutes.

Hope this helps somebody.

I can vouch for updating when in safe mode. Tried re-installing from recovery and that did not work. Actually did a nice clean install of Big Sur but it only installed 11.2 and I would have though it would be 11.2.1 right from Apple’s servers. The fourth tech support told me that’s not the case. Had I searched online about this issue and saw this post it would have saved me 2 days working on this issue. Unfortunately none of the tech support people I talked to were unaware of this issue. The 5th one I mentioned this to did seem to acknowledge it and I advised him I was going to try recovery. When that failed I did in safe mode and it was updated in 20 minutes. I sure hope when 11.3 drops the install process will be much more smooth. So Tony, your post brought my blood pressure down and my MacBook is running great.
