Beach ball and slower performance of new iMac and MacBook Pro

I recently upgraded from my old iMac and from my older MacBook Pro. In both cases, I used the Time Machine backup from my old iMac to set up the new computers. I find beach balling frequently, especially with the Finder window freezing at times. Moving files from one folder to another takes a long time. I think somehow it all goes through DropBox. I am afraid I am somewhat technically naive. I bought EtreCheckPro and have run a check and there are numerous issues...very few of which I understand. I have a lot of apps and files I do not want to lose. I have Catalina 10.15.7 loaded.

Please advise. Do you want me to send the EtreCheckPro generated report?

Many thanks in advance

Log into another vanilla admin user account, Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac and see if the problem persists. (This tells us if the problem is limited to your user account or is system wide).

The mds_stores process seems to be running away. It's associated with Spotlight and indexing of files on all mounted hard drives. Check it out in the Activity Monitor/CPU section. Then boot into Safe Mode by booting with the Shift key held down, open Activity Monitor and check there to see if the problem persists, particularly when you try to drag a file .  Reboot normally and test again.

NOTE: Safe Mode boot can take up to 10 minutes as it's doing the following;

• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts

• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

For the iMac:

  1. Delete Intego according to the developer’s instructions.
  2. Delete Western Digital Software according to the developer’s instructions.
  3. Delete “Pulse Secure”. according to the developer’s instructions.
  4. Delete Virus Barrier according to the developer’s instructions.
  5. Restart your iMac.

THE ONLY anti-malware app you should ever have is Malwarebytes for Mac!

Hi OT: I got quite out of my depth and out of time too as I have a lot pending to be done. On my iMac (exactly the same issues as on the MacBook) I took the desperate step last night of backing up my useful documents on an external drive. I then erased the entire disk and installed Big Sur (this failed a couple of times and I needed to run Disk Utility to do a repair. I have now installed a bare minimum of my apps (I was clearly carrying a lot of legacy 32 bit stuff). I have removed DropBox. The beachball problem is gone. However, when I just ran Etrecheck with no external drive attached (see attached) after installing just a couple of apps, I still have "Stuck iCloud" as a major issue.

My questions are: (1) how can I optimize the performance as the report still shows "Below Average" performance (2) why am I showing so many partitions when I did not create them (at least did not mean to) in the Etrecheck report under Storage. How do I get around this or do I need to? See also attached image of Disk Utility showing the multiple disks and also shown in the Etrecheck report on Hardware.

I am sorry I have taken up so much of your and Jack-19s time with the original issue. I hope this approach I have taken may reduce the amount of time you have to spend and perhaps if this works I will do the same on the MacBook Pro. Thanks in advance...

What I'd do is:p

1 - boot into Safe Mode by booting with the Shift key held down and reboot normally.

NOTE: Safe Mode boot can take up to 10 minutes as it's doing the following;

• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts

• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

2 - then boot into the Recovery volume (boot with the Command + R keys held down), select Disk Utility and repair the drive. If you get any error notifications rerun until there are no notifications. Reboot normally and keep tabs on performance.

With reference to my "big" problem, are you suggesting I try again after disabling VPN or uninstalling it?

I'd try disabling it and run to see if there's any improvement to performance.

As for protecting medical records you could put them in PDF format, password protect the files and transmit the password to each client in another type of communication. You'd have to make that call as the requirements are pretty strict on medical record protection.

Others have had problems with Dropbox running all the time in the background for backup. Do you use it for the medical files? Is that HIPAA complaint?

One user left Dropbox and went to Box instead and thought it was much less invasive to performance. Just some food for thought.

Also iCloud drive is a syncing feature and not an off computer storage facility. Any changes, edits, additions, deletions, etc., to any file is reflected in the iCloud Drive also.

  1. Make sure all data you want of Macintosh HD - One is stored on the regular Macintosh HD. Then, select Macintosh HD - One and hit the "-" in the Disk Utility toolbar.
  2. The structure goes Physical Storage > Container > Macintosh HD (with snapshot) > Macintosh HD - Data.
  3. To enable right click go to System Preferences > Mouse/Trackpad > Enable Secondary Click on right side.

Cheers,

Jack
