I was asked by Apple second level support to provide details of the crash reports logged when it happens.

It is [SOCD report detected: (AP watchdog expired)

Even when idle.

Steps taken with 2nd level support:

  1. MAC OS REINSTALL.
  2. MAC DISK ERASE AND REINSTALL FROM ICLOUD.
  3. ISSUE ALSO HAPPENS IN GUEST MODE LOG IN.

Apple 2nd level support seemed to think it was due to external hard drive issues. They asked me to test without drive connected.

can confirm now that the SOCD crash would only occur with My external USB A Western Digital Hard drive physically connected. After disconnecting it has not happened again, so far. After 5 days.

do you all have external drives connected?

I have a brand new MacBook Air and this has been happening to me from Day 1. I have been regularly engaged with 2nd level support. I have repeatedly wiped my disk, reinstalled Big Sur, and worked without any peripherals. It is still happening and they are now going to take my machine and replace the logic board (apple-speak for mother board).

I've had my M1 Mini 16/512 since April, and just experienced this crash for the first time. I have been splitting my usage between the Mini and my Hackintosh via a TESmart DP KVM Switch. There have been instances when I switch, of the Dell Monitor not waking but never this crash. Reading the entire thread leads me to a couple of things that I have in common with others is the WD EasyStore 8TB drive, and this is the first week that I have used the machine continuously for more than a few hours. It has been running for 96 hours at this writing. I also have a hub attached w/a 2TB Samsung SSD installed, and a 6TB G-Drive connected to the USB 3.1 port on the hub. The WD rarely stays connected as it's a storage only, and I rarely read from that drive. It has been continuously connected during the current run. I am going to disconnect it, leave the machine on and see what happens in the next 3-4 days.

I managed to trigger this bug manually the other week. Running the latest version Big Sur 11.5.2 on an 8GB M1 Mac mini.

I have an WD Easystore external hard drive that I use for storing media. I simply did a finder search in a folder containing thousands of images, and this caused the system to immediately crash and reboot.

The crash was slightly different this time however. The moment it crashed, a bunch of rapid fire clicking sounds came out of the Mac mini's speaker. I double checked that it came out of the computer and not from the HDD. Also, instead of the screen turning completely green or pink before rebooting, it turned partially pink. There was a sort of a glitched-out, checkerboard pattern of pink squares all over the screen. This lasted maybe 5 seconds before it rebooted and I was greeted with the familiar SOCD AP watchdog pop-up.

I have not tried to repeat this, as I don't want to mess with any of the data on my hard drives. I figure it's worth sharing here though.

Look this might not be for everyone as it’s not cheap. Since starting to use a thunderbolt hub I haven’t had a crash in over a month or so.

I personally don’t know for sure but if the issue lies with the USB ports (as that was the problem for me), I would just run through the thunderbolt. It’s what I have done and I’ve had my M1 mini on since the last crash.

Expensive yes, but almost a bit of a investment as having an external SSD and other sorts through thunder gives great performance. Depends what you want I guess. Just my experience.

Thanks for letting me know! Are you sure the disk decryption has been completed though? It's supposed to run in the background after turning it off:

"Decryption occurs in the background as you use your Mac, and only while your Mac is awake and plugged in to AC power. You can check progress in the FileVault section of Security & Privacy preferences."
