USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 on Thunderbolt 3/USB4 (iMac 27" 2020)

Heya,

I have a question about USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 and Thunderbolt 3/USB 4 and I can't finde any answer at the Internet.

I bought a brand new iMac 27" 2020 which has 2 Thunderbolt 3 (40 GBit/s) ports.

I also bought a brand new external WD Black P50 NVMe SSD with 1 TB and USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 (Up to 20 GBit/s).

The SSD arrived me today and I was a little bit wondering why its shown at the system preferences at "USB3.1 Bus" and not at "Thunderbolt/USB4".

I also realized that its only connected with 10 Gbit/s. I tested it with "Black Magic Disk Speed Test" and its not going over 1000 MB/s read/write.

Is it possible that Thunderbolt 3/USB 4 doesn't support USB 3.2 Gen 2x2?

And when yes, why?

Thunderbolt 3/USB4 does have 4 PCIe 3.0 Lanes, I thought?

The new USB3.x naming makes it unbelievable hard to find any useful information at the internet.

Many thanks and kind regards

Is anyone aware of any Thunderbolt 3 to USB 3.2 2x2 dock/adaptor type options to get around the limitation of USB 3.1 Gen 2 on the ports when connecting USB devicves? I've done some searching but not found anything yet.

Asking because I have the same issue here with SanDisk Extreme Pro NVMe Portable SSD drives. Maxing out just under 1GB/s when they're capable of double that.

Whilst it's still twice as fast as older style SSDs on a SATA6 USB adaptor, it's still annoying considering the cost difference between the two types of drive.

If anyone is wondering why you'd need such speed: multi-camera video editing with multi track audio and real time effects processing on top. I could obviously use the internal drive which runs at 2.5GB/s read and write, but it's very handy to have projects on external media for many reasons.

It's a shame SanDisk and others implementing these devices didn't include Thunderbolt 3 connectivity or have an option to purchase a Thunderbolt 3 variant.

Indeed. I found a couple of Thunderbolt 3 NVMe drive enclosures that seemed promising; had to pass on them in the end though because we also have a 2012 Retina MacBook Pro which would need access and it only has Thunderbolt 2. I have the Apple adaptor for this (3 to 2 and vice versa), but unless the enclosure has it's own power (which these didn't), then it won't work on the older machine.

Fortunately, I'm able to send the SanDisk drives back for a full refund. If I can't get the full benefit at the moment, I may as well stick with the SATA3 (6Gbps) setup I've been using successfully for a couple of years now and save over 50% of the cost. It would have been nice, but it's not essential at this point.
