Apple Mail AOL log-in "Unable to verify account name or password"

I've ben using AOL on Apple Mail for years; on an iMac (OS Sierra) and also on iPads (now on a new Mini 5). Yesterday there was a pop-up on my iMac asking me to enter name, AOL email address and password. I did that (with the correct password - I can get email via browser webmail using the same password), but it keeps telling me "Unable to verify account name or password". Neither my iMac nor my iPad are connecting with AOL via Apple Mail. I've done a lot of Googling and tried everything I can find that's suggested on the Web, including removing the AOL account. But when I try to add it again, I get the pop-up, and the same thing happens - "Unable to verify account name or password".

Hi - I have the answer - and no thanks top AOL tech who just said sorry, we don't support 3rd party apps.

To fix this do as follows, and it cured both of my AOL accounts immediately

1/ Sign in to AOL Mail on the web using your screenname etc

2/ Click on your Username on top right corner

3/ From menu on the left that appears, select "Account Security"

4/ At botom of list you should see "Generate App Password" Click on that

5/ From dropdown box select which system you having probs with (iPad iMac iphone android etc

6/ Follow instructions from thereon

When you get to use the password it will generate, if it doesnt work immediately and you get the same message as before, you will need to remove the AOL account from your device and then add it back in, then use the password they provide as above. On mine it worked immediately on one account I had already removed from my iMac, but on the account I had left on there but just didn't work I had to do the remove and add bit.

Had this issue today. Spoke to AOL mail twitter support. They suggested "In that case, please try to create an app password and try to log in on the account after. More info here:"

I followed this very easily and after generating an app password through the link it worked instantly with the new password.

Hope this helps.

Hi - Not quite. Your actual password has not changed if you log into AOL directly. The AOL generated password is specific to the platform you are looking to hook up - ie, if asking it to generate a password for imac, its different to one for your iphone. Providing you use your devices means of remembering that password then you will not need to use it again. If for some reason your system and you forgets it, you will need to generate a new one as per the beginning of this topic.

Not sure I've made this clear, but you can always log into AOL using your original password - it just won't work anymore on your device software

No, you will need to generate a passcode for each different platform you are to use. So, follow above details and when it asks you what platform in drop down box, select iphone. Do the same for Imac or whatever and it will give a code for that. TBH, it could be the same code, so try it.

Your original AOL Mail password will now only work if you go directly to AOL Mail via a browser.

My sympathy!

On my new iPad Mini 5, having not been able to get in after working on the iMac issue, I did the usual 'Add account' thing and it worked.

On my old iPad Mini 1 with the help of an Apple advisor (many hours on the phone about all this to various very helpful and determined Apple techs) I got it working, but when I changed the password (as I had to in the course of trying to get it to work on the iMac desktop) I couldn't get back,; tried remove and re-add, but no luck.

And I still can't get in on my iMac. No problem adding my gmail account – but, oddly, it accepted my 'add-account' and log-in for another AOL account I have but rarely use. (I have so many contacts that use my normal AOL address that switching addresses isn't an option).

But despite hours and hours of many attempts, approaches and phone discussions, and screen-sharing with Apple support, I'm still not able to get my usual AOL address working on Mail. Booting in safe mode doesn't make any difference, and a reinstall of the OS is a possibility, but I'm not even sure that would work, so perhaps I'll just have to live with using AOL on webmail on the desktop, and perhaps the old iPad too (though I'm inclined to speak to Apple support again).

AOL can't help – they say that as I can get webmail it's a 'third party issue'. Apple, on the other hand, have really been very helpful, patent and polite, and really tried hard.

Thanks for your reply - However, the AOL app is only available for Apple iphone and ipad - They do not have an App for Macs.

Interestingly I tried to register my issue with AOL and as part of the process it asks you to fill in on a form the AOL email address you are having difficulty with. On completing, the form failed to send saying it did not recognise the AOL email. So I tried the second email address I am having issuers with, same problem. When I entered the only one that is still working with my Imac, it took that straight away. That almost confirms the issue is at AOL not Apple or my 'puter. (I can log into AOL individually with any of the names and retrieve my emails)

Would be very interested to hear how you got your ipads working with it, and also on your mac - I'm having exactly the same issue and have tried all the suggested fixes I could find. I have 3 different AOL email accounts, 2 are working normally, the 3rd just says "Unable to Verify Account Name or Password" each time the password is entered, via existing or setting up new. I like you can got to AOL via web and log in as normal, with no 2 stage verification. All settings on all the accounts are the same from what I can see. Good luck, I'm rooting for you haha

In case you didn’t see this, because my reply seemed to go to myself rather than you - it worked! Thanks so much! After all those hours of trying everything, with the assistance of several very helpful and determined Apple people, such a simple solution. AOL should be telling people, including Apple, about it - if they'd done that it would have saved us all a lot of time and frustration! Thanks hugely, again!

Gosh - this seemed to work for me too! Thank you. I also had to enter my computer login, at the end - after following all your instructions - when it popped up with an "accountsd" access request, but I did that, and I miraculously have my AOL account back on my iMac. This is after getting the persistent Unable to Verify message, when i went to add the account back in. One note, I've always thought it was Apple Mail, but AOL knows it as Mac Mail. I wonder if I'll ever need the password again in the future. I think i'm going to take a screenshot of your miracle instructions and email it to me for potential future use.

Thank you so much Eyephone5C, and AC19 for your great, clear question!
