S.M.A.R.T error

I was trying to upgrade to OS Catalina on my Late 2012 Mac Mini when it gave me this error message: "This disk has a hardware problem that can't be repaired. Back up as much of the data as possible and replace the disk."

The disk is an Apple 250Gb SSD with only programs and application data on it. The rest of my personal data is on a second internal SSD. If I run a Time machine backup on the affected drive will I be able to bring my computer back up and re-image the data to the boot drive?

Mac mini, macOS 10.14

Hello Minifixer1951,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. It looks like you're getting a message about your disk can't be repaired and we'd be happy to look into this with you.

It's a good idea to create a Time Machine backup of the affected hard drive to have a copy of your data but as the disk seems corrupted, and can't be repaired, we're not sure if the backup will not be corrupted as well, and can be restored without issues later.

Please check these helpful links:
