This message cannot be displayed because of the way it is formatted

When I send an email to myself from my iPad, E.G. BCC or CC, the email comes into my inbox with the message “This message cannot be displayed because of the way it is formatted. Ask the sender to send it again using a different format or email program.”


If I delete the message and move it back into my inbox it displays correctly.


Any idea as to the cause of this and how to rectify it?

Thanks so much for answering those questions for us.


Since it sounds like the issue only happens when sending a message using Bcc, can you let us know if you're using the steps on the following page to send a copy of the message using Bcc? Address and send email in Mail on iPad


Also, we noticed you are using an older version of iPadOS; the current version is 14.4. You may want to try updating iPadOS using the steps outlined here: Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch Please be sure to check out the "Before you update" section of the previous link for the steps to back up your device prior to updating.

  1. Which iPadOS version are you using? Find the software version on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod
  2. Is this happening when using the Apple Mail app, or another email application?
  3. What type of email account are you using? If you use multiple email accounts, does this happen with all of them, or only a certain account?

Many thanks for repsonding. In answer to your questions:


  1. Which iPadOS version are you using? - Version 14.3
  2. Is this happening when using the Apple Mail app, or another email application? - Using Apple Mail app
  3. What type of email account are you using? If you use multiple email accounts, does this happen with all of them, or only a certain account? - It happens on multiple email accounts. However I have noticed that on sending it directly from one email account to another, I can read the email in the receiving email account ok. However the BCC copy states “This message cannot be displayed because of the way it is formatted. Ask the sender to send it again using a different format or email program.”
