Flights climbed stopped working

My iPhone SE2 always used to record a number of times I had climbed my flight of stairs fairly accurately until (I think) I installed iOS 14.4. It now registers the first couple of times each day but doesn't seem to register anything after that. For example today, whilst my steps and distance walked updated at 21:30 hours, my flights climbed registered 2 having updated at 09:19 hours. I know I've climbed the stairs three or four times since that time.

As an experiment I lay the phone on the floor at the bottom of the stairs, climbed the stairs and held the phone up by the ceiling having arrived! Finally, it registered that flight. Do I now have to do this every time?

Hi there, macfan7,

Thanks for visiting the Apple Support Communities for help with your iPhone. If we understand, the Health app is not recording flights climbed accurately. We are happy to help!

Based on what you've described, we recommend the following troubleshooting:

  1. Check for, and install, any available updates for your iOS software: Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support. The current version is iOS 14.4.
  2. Make sure that the "Fitness Tracking" and "Health" options are both enabled under Settings > Privacy > Motion & Fitness.
  3. Restart your iPhone: Restart your iPhone - Apple Support.

If the issue continues after that, please get in touch with Apple Support directly: Get Support.

Have a lovely day.

Thanks for that…

  1. I'm already running 14.4 as you'll see from my post - it only started misbehaving since I installed 14.4 though that could be a red herring even though I'm pretty confident I haven't altered anything that would affect it.
  2. Those are both turned on and presumably have been all the while as it always used to work.
  3. I had already tried that without success but failed to mention it in my post - sorry.

I was about to contact Apple as suggested but noticed it had worked correctly that day. It's now worked as it always used to for the last three days - without me doing anything to the phone or the way I walk up stairs! Perhaps just posting an issue on here is sufficient to fix it ;-)
